What Are We Working On This Week?

We're in the studio this morning working on some exciting new shows for Michigan Magazine!

On the agenda and on the editing "doing" list is our new series featuring Shaun Beardsley and crew over at Liberty Pines of Rose City!

Shaun will be sharing her love of Natural Horsemanship on a regular basis.

We've filmed two upcoming segments and hope to have it debuting in January!

Natural Horsemanship is an amazing training procedure where a mutually respectful bond is formed between horse and master where the horse looks forward to training and pleasing the trainer!

We've seen Shaun and ranch hand & student Don Lenard in action with amazing results

We Know all those who love their horse are going to want to tune in to Shaun's tips on successful training!

ALSO in editing is the story of John Marek and his "other side"....John, known to many as the accordion playing side of the SPANKY AND JHONNNY duo seen at fairs and special events and gatherings....has another side of "entertainment" when not on the road with "Spanky"...

John Marek is an accomplished children's magician and entertainer...

We followed John around the state as he performed at various public venues from the Kalkaska Trout Festival to appearing as "Johnny Appleseed" at the West Branch Public Library!

We hoped to have presented John in a special "promotional" video earlier in the year and apologize for the delay but I think you'll enjoy his story as a feature on RFD TV as well as in a Promo video Johnny will be distributing...Stay tuned!!!!

We're also coordinating new Shelter Stories from area animal shelters sponsored by Carey's Gentle Grooming of Hale.

The Wonderful thing about Carey is that she is very involved with the animal adoption campaign and vigorously promotes the adoption process with an annual show and friendly competition during the annual Hale Balloon Festival....WE WILL FEATURE LAST YEARS SHOW on RFD TV very, very soon and hope to be more of a vital part of the show next year!

Also being planned is our new UNCLE CLIFF'S KITCHEN segment to be filmed at the SKYLINE EVENT CENTER (The former Michigan Magazine Museum)

Not sure what's on the menu for our first filming in April, but we do know Uncle Cliff is inviting anyone who would like to watch the filming process,as an audience participant, to contact us and make reservations now at (989) 272-5606. We have room for no more then 20-25 people...Tickets are free and you get to taste Uncle Cliff final results....stay tuned! Is IT'S GOING TO BE A ONCE IN A LIFE TIME EXPERIENCE!

We've filmed many cooking segments at the facilities in the past and know what fun it will be!!

PS: If you'd like to be one of our growing list of sponsors on the segment contact UNCLE CLIFF A.S.A.P. @ (989) 257-3603

We're also working tirelessly on new segments for our MAKE IT HAPPEN SEGMENT with host Dwayne Leforge handicap advocate.

With myself doing much of the editing and all post production...time is of essence and we apologize for the delay in some of our past filming not making it on air yet! IE: Highlights of the Posen Potato festival...Updates on the works of various Michigan Economic Development projects! The LIVE Streaming tour of Kenyon's mysteries with the Plainfield Township Historical society!....An interview with another Michigan Author who took a humerus look at her "breast cancer" experience.

The interviews and visits not yet aired are too numerous to list....BUT LET IT BE KNOWN we haven't forgot and we'll start listing our upcoming show schedule soon on one of our websites.

I send out a BIG THANK YOU to Jeremy and Darlene Lane of MEMRA Productions of Northville for their help in filming and editing where they can...AND to the STAFF at OCTV in Oxford, Jim Hughes & Teri Stiles, working as Michigan Magazine TV corespondents...TRIPLE THANKS TO YOU ALL!

Of course our Account Executive / Producer Clifford Parent is vital in keeping us on the road and making sure all our wonderful supporters and advertising are extremely happy, satisfied AND SEEING RESULTS! Thanks Cliff!

ATTENTION: COPS AND DOUGHNUTS FANS! We are sooooo delighted to hear of Bubba's return after Gastric Sleeve surgery!..Watch for THIS new series of segments STARTING NEXT WEEK...."Life With Bubba"...We will keep track of his post surgery life in special shows!! Go Bubba!

We may be "way behind" in our editing of new shows BUT be aware that we instantly post on our social media sites ie: Vine , Keek, YouTube, Instagram, Blogger, Blogg Talk Radio and Ustream.TV MOST OF OUR visits and "mini pre edited" interviews of our travels!

I've gone on much too long here....All I can say is stay tuned and check in at all our social media sites by going to www.michiganmagazine.com HERE AT THE TOP you'll find most of our links!

Your's VERY TRULY, Barry! :-)

Looking forward to 2014! Things can only get BETTER!...Am I right????????????

It's all around us!

Michigan entrepreneurship is digging it's heals into this great lake state's soil determined to make Michigan the "land of opportunity"!

On this week's show we feature the "spirit of Michigan" creativity and talent as we visit the Standing Company of Saginaw and witness the amazing craftsmanship of wooden clock maker John Crews of Metamora!

Michigan IS the land of opportunity and dynamic resources if one just looks around and "asks"!

When I think back to the actual interviews and visits in these two features on this week's show #1851 I recall, vividly, the excitement and determination in following a dream our guests showed.

SHOPPING LOCALLY ON "BLACK FRIDAY"...What a pleasure!

The Michigan Magazine TV crew of Clifford Parent, Lloyd Meir and myself made the trek over to Hale for Hale Hardware's annual "MOONLIGHT MADNESS" event on the ever popular "Black Friday" (Friday following Thanksgiving)

What a delight it was!

Much different then what we witnessed earlier on TV news reports. All that running, shouting, fighting and being "thrown out of the store" in the "spirit of the season" was a bit unnerving to say the least!

This is NOT what we found at our local Hale hardware store!

Yes there were crowds waiting for the doors to open at 6 pm....Yes there was plenty of excited talk going on outside among the crowd...But in contrast to the "big box store" experience of screaming and threats....At Hale it was more of excited murmur amongst neighbors with plenty of "how was your thanksgiving" & "Merry Christmas Neighbor" heard with "hi fives" and pats on the back.

Ahhhhh the true spirit of the season was present at Hale Hardware!

As the doors opened there was no mad rush....there were plenty of fantastic deals for everyone...Jerry and crew made sure of that!

It was an evening of deals and fun for the whole family!

From fun games of "bubble blowing" to "apple stacking" & "shooting gallery" fun..it was an evening everyone enjoyed from the youngest to the eldest!

You'll see what we mean as we present our video coverage here later today!

Oh yea! Forgot to tell you that some lucky shopper is about to win a $1,000.00 shopping spree! If you were there last evening and registered GET READY!!! I can hardly wait to announce the winner...STAY TUNED!

Our wish for all our neighbors and friend is to please shop locally to keep the "true" spirit of Christmas Alive!

It was so refreshing to feel the warmth of the season again.

Keep the faith every body and may the true spirit of the season find you!

WONDERFUL Banana pudding recipe by Lorraine of Chuck's Soul Food of Pontiac!

Lorraine of Chuck Soul Food near the Pontiac Silver Done share this recipe with the Michigan Magazine TV crew back in the 90s.

It was WONDERFUL.....HEAVENLY......Thank you Lorraine!

Even though Chuck's Soul Food is no longer in existence...the recipe will live on forever!

Enjoy as my partner, the late Dell Vaughan, visits with Lorraine...and I (drooling) handle the direction and filming.......Happy Thanksgiving everyone....Try this for an extra holiday treat!

Bigfoot Still The Subject of Believers In Northern Michigan.....

Bigfoot in Northern Michigan?

We've dealt with the subject in countless interviews featuring investigators who've opened up to the Michigan Magazine Cameras.

We've also conducted Bigfoot seminars at our facilities in Comins....with believers and skeptics alike.

The subject is still a "hot button" that starts the conversation rolling in N. Michigan

There are still active investigations in progress....One such team reportedly is gathering some amazing "evidence" that they will share in an upcoming video series we hope to share with you soon on Michigan Magazine.

Some have asked me if I believe in such a creature. A creature so elusive that all so called "evidence" is questioned, ridiculed and dismissed as a hoax or explainable forest anomaly.

I always answer "I believe in the possibilities of things still unknown lurking and/or intelligently cloaking it's existence from encroaching humans"..

Those witnesses I've interviewed are sincere....They have seen or heard something out of the ordinary in the deep northern Michigan forests..

Stay tuned for an exciting journey....Take a look at this video clip of the upcoming series.....

I DID NOT KNOW THAT ABOUT THANKSGIVING! HERE ARE 10 THINGS I DIDN'T KNOW!!!

I know I eat a lot of Turkey and am thankful for many things on this traditional American Holiday!

I know that amazing feeling of unconditional love when family is near!

I also know how lonely the day can become if you find yourself all alone on this day!

BUT there are many other things I just did not know about this North American Traditional Holiday....Kick back and check out this run down of 10 things you may not know about Thanksgiving....then prepare for the wonderful holiday season to officially commence......Happy Thanksgiving....Merry Christmas....and Happy New Year!

Cooking with Clara is on of my favorite You Tube destinations.

She's about 98 years old now and last we heard still cooking up wonderful memories in her DEPRESSION ERA COOKING series "Cooking with Clara".....

I admire her energy and love of family and traditional values she attributes to her long productive years as a Wife, Mother and Grandmother.

I believe her children and grandchildren are something special in producing these wonderful video visits!

Today I hope you'll stick around our Michigan Magazine TV blog cottage in the woods as Clara stops by via another video...

This one is something very special....as we simply spend the afternoon with our own "Aunt Clara" (She's really not our Aunt....but she feels so much like family....I don't think she'd mind us calling her our Aunt)...

Gather around now, take your shoes off at the door, and get ready to relax with Clara.....enjoy

Comments on this week's show #1845 The Extremely Fun Cowboy Races & A visit with Barbara Yoder Michigan Author!

This week's show was another of my favorites!

As always Shaun Beardsley and her Natural Horsemanship abilities shown through in flying colors with another great Extremely Fun Cowboy Race at Liberty Pines despite the rainy weather.

This was the second annual and like the first the "show went on" despite the rain....As Shaun stated to the competitors in the show....We're all Cowboys and Cowgirls...we can handle it"....And that they did.

We're looking forward to the third annual next October!

Don't forget all you equestrian enthusiasts....Shaun will be hosting a new segment on Michigan Magazine give tips on horse handling utilizing "Natural Horsemanship"

We had planned on debuting the segment this November but productions has postponed the debut until a yet unspecified time....We're excited about the segments and I think you all will enjoy them...All I can say is "STAY TUNED" for the latest on the upcoming show.

The second segment on this week's show deals with our visit with Barbara Yoder and her book FINDING THE WAY.

Barbara, here husband Eugene and there children left the Amish life to live a more secular lifestyle...That decision can be felt in her work of fiction that is inspired by her Amish life growing up.

It's a wonderful read and we'll be bringing you part two of our visit in a couple of weeks

A curious thing about Barbara since we last met a few years back....We attempted to contact her for an update on the progress of her new book she was starting the week we visited

We can not get hold of her by phone or email....And her web site is no longer in existence!

This leads me to think that possibly she may have returned to the Amish Faith.

In our interview in this week's show I could feel a bit of longing in her heart to return to her family and friends she had to leave behind when she left the faith...

We will let you know if we do make contact with Barbara or Eugene Yoder of Chase

Meanwhile....you can still purchase a copy of FINDING THE WAY at our website dedicated to books and authors we've featured on Michigan Magazine! CLICK HERE Then click on the tab "MORE" then "Michigan Books Reviewed"

We hope you enjoy this week's show #1845 at your leisure...on demand here:

Comments on this week's show 1844 OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS!

Yup....Can you believe it?

We are heading into another holiday season!

First Halloween, then Thanksgiving....then...yes then....CHRISTMAS, followed closely by a brand new year!

GASP!

Take a deep breath and ENJOY this time of the year!

We hope we can help you do that on this week's show with a fine leisurely sleigh ride in the N. Michigan Wilderness at Thunder Bay Resort!

The first segment is a ride we took back in February of this year when it was rather chilly.....alright down right, bone chilling COLD!..Even though we said on the show it was a TWO BLANKET trip to the lodge and the delicious gourmet meal.....I WOULD HAVE GIVEN MY EYE TEETH for a third...fourth and 5th blanket that day!...BUT IT CERTAINLY WAS WORTH IT! Watch the show and you'll see what we mean!

Also on the show we feature a small segment on "Pumpkin Chunkin" shared with us by Journalist and friend Jerry Nunn. Jerry and his crew filmed this event at Wellington Farm near Grayling. What we "northerners" will do for fun can stretch the imagination! Lots of fun here! Thanks Jerry!

You know it's the season of Good will and sharing as we present to you the Bikers 4 Kids get together at the Sportsman Bar and Grill on M30 North of Gladwin...The meal and auction proceeds go to needy kids and families during the Christmas season!

DON'T FORGET TO ATTEND THE EVENT THIS SATURDAY NOVEMBER 2ND 2013...The Door prizes, raffles, and auction items will astound you! IE: a four wheeler....guns and more! Check out the show and YOU'LL SEE EXACTLY WHAT WE MEAN!

SEASONS GREETINGS EVERYONE (TONGUE IN CHEEK)!

Enjoy the show :-)

Let The American Traditions Begin! Enjoy!

I can not believe ourTraditional American Holiday season celebrations are about to begin!

NEXT WEEK Halloween...then a few weeks later..Thanksgiving.....Then Christmas....Then a new year! WOW!

I can feel the excitement in the air...hear chatter among kids checking school schedules for "days off".....and senior citizens looking wistfully into the chilled autumn sky remembering traditions and family celebrations of their past....(sigh) I must admit...I've become one of the latter!

Pumpkin Pie, Turkey, Mom's famous stuffing and hot homemade biscuits...the aroma takes me back and warms my soul...

Enjoy the traditions!

Comments on this week's show 1843

This week's show is another example of the perseverance of the Michigan spirit!

Our Journey to Uncle Don's Apple Pie small distillery in Cadillac was a big surprise for the Michigan Magazine TV Crew...We simply didn't expect what we witnessed and learned of this fairly new industry growing in Michigan.

Upon entering Uncle Don's on Mitchell street we were welcomed with the sweet aroma of Apple Pies cooking....This is the secret recipe infused into Uncle Don's cocktail blends of Vodka.

As you watch this week's show you'll see the operation up close and personal as Uncle Don and his assistant QC person, Amanda, operate the stills and bottle the product in this ultra sanitary facility! Quite a difference from what many imagine a "craft" still would look like! (ie: backwoods old copper tubing camouflaged with leaves to fool the "revenuers")

This new distillery business is strictly regulated by the state and Uncle Don has all the licensing paperwork posted

They have found their niche'

Then on we head to Bellaire High School to witness an artist in action.

Former Art Instructor Ray Villafane demonstrates his love of sculpture while teaching the art of creating the most unusual JACK O LANTERNS!

Since our visit with Ray back in the 1990s he left the school system to pursue his first love....Sculpture IN ALL SORTS OF MEDIUM.

You'll find Ray's work all over the internet and coveted by a loyal clientele....Bellaire High School is where it all started.

Traveling the Michigan backroads is OUR favorite past time and bringing our adventures to our viewers is our "joy"....You know how it feels when you see something that makes you burst with pride and excitment?...That's how we feel each week!

WAIT A MINUTE! DON'T STOP READING...At the end of this show you'll be given a chance to WIN A WONDERFUL TEDDY BEAR MADE OF GENUINE MICHIGAN ALPACA WOOL valued at $50.00...You have to watch to find out how...HURRY WE'LL BE GIVING IT AWAY SOON!

NOW ON WITH THE SHOW....Enjoy!

The author of the book “The Purple Gang: Organized Crime in Detroit” will be speaking in area this week

ROSE CITY — The author of the book “The Purple Gang: Organized Crime in Detroit” will be speaking at two events in the area this week. The Rose City Area Historical Society and Ogemaw District Library will be hosting two events to showcase author Paul Kavieff and his book. The first program will take place Thursday, June 13 at the Rose Township Hall at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to anyone interested in the Purple Gang and their connection to Graceland and the area. Kavieff will be available to sign books, answer questions and will be speaking about the history of the gang. “It’s been an interesting mystery to people in the area,” said Marilyn Pachota of the historical society. “Most people around here have heard of the Purple Gang. Paul’s book will substantiate some of the questions that people have. It’s just an interesting story.” The second event is a fundraiser for the society — a “meet and greet” with Kavieff on Friday, June 14 at 7 p.m. at the Rose Valley Winery. Kavieff will be giving a short presentation at the event about the Purple Gang and its relationship to the area, after which he will be available to mingle and answer questions. A $20 donation at the door will provide guests with wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres, desserts and door prizes. Proceeds from this fundraiser will help the Rose City Area Historical Society cover the cost of retrieving lost records. “We have lost a great deal of materials during a flood three or four years ago, and are working toward getting our records restored,” said Pachota. To RSVP for the Friday event, call 989-345-5659 or 989-473-4164.

What great time we had on the trail in NE Michigan's forests near Hillman! Here at Thunder Bay Resort on a brisk February afternoon we slipped into the wilderness aboard horse draw sleighs for close encounters with the, some times elusive yet beautiful, majestic Michigan Elk.

It was definitely a "two blanket" ride to the rustic lodge where a gourmet meal awaiting us...plus plenty of "Michigan" wines flowed to one's hearts content!

This is show 1819 where we share with you this amazing journey with the entire Michigan Magazine crew that included my wife Rhonda and me, Dan and Judy Morgan, Cliff Parent and Lloyd Meir....Join us!...

Then on this show we stop by the studios of incredible portrait artist Jason Nuttall of West Branch.

We learn of Jason's inspiration and early years that culminates with him establishing a loyal following of art aficionados! ENJOY THIS WEEK'S SHOW!

It was a beautiful early afternoon as we pulled into the Detroit Historical Societies beautiful renovated museum!

The museum is a story in itself...and we plan on returning to do just that. 14 million dollars in improvements and additions have been completed since our last visit over 10 years ago.

This was the perfect location for our visit and interview with 17 year old Luke Jaden of Detroit.

Luke is one of the state's youngest film directors around working on a documentary scheduled for release in late may.

The documentary deals with John Brown and Detroit's involvement in the underground railroad

We spent a few hours with Luke and his crew as they interviewed Kimberly Simmons of the Michigan Freedom Trail Commission..who also has a direct link to John Brown.

Kimberly's family has Detroit family history dating back nearly 200 years.

We are anxious to see how Luke and the crew will weave the story to Kimberly's testimony!

Our talk with Luke proved to be quite uplifting with his enthusiasm for "film making" quite contagious! With young up and coming film makers beginning to make their mark here in Michigan, the business, I believe will thrive despite the cut in State financial initiatives.

Michigan has much more to offer the film industry then tax breaks. The diverse geography is second to none AND the talented actors, technicians and behind the scenes pre and post productin talent is phenomenal! THAT will be the subject of another upcoming segment on Michigan Magazine.

My producer Dan Morgan and I were quite overwhelmed at the professionalism of Luke's crew and his dedication to his project!

Hope you will catch the interview on an upcoming segment!

Documentary filming continues in Detroit

Michigan Magazine had a wonderful weekend on the set of an upcoming documentary on John Brown and the Underground railroad. We visited with the crew on site at the Detroit History Museum...got a good interview with 17 year old director Luke Jaden and other members of the crew. This young man has quite the credentials in the acting a movie business...BUT this is the first venture as director. The independent film will be entered in Sundance and other film festivals...We'll have a few photos here and also some of my personal observations of the excitement of movie making! A big thanks to Luke and the crew for the great hospitality and cooperation in dealing with Michigan Magazine :-)
